Background of the study:
Blacksmithing, a traditional craft in Akure South, has historically contributed to rural economic development by providing essential tools, creating employment, and preserving indigenous skills. This artisanal practice not only supports household income through the production of metal goods but also stimulates ancillary economic activities such as trade and apprenticeships (Adebanjo, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024). Recent studies reveal that traditional blacksmithing, when integrated with modern market practices, can be a catalyst for sustainable rural development. However, challenges such as declining interest among youth, competition from mass-produced goods, and limited access to modern technology pose significant obstacles. This study appraises the contribution of blacksmithing to the rural economy, exploring its economic, social, and cultural dimensions. By examining the dynamics between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary economic pressures, the research aims to provide insights into strategies that could revitalize the craft and enhance its contribution to local development while preserving cultural heritage.
Statement of the problem:
Despite its historical significance, blacksmithing in Akure South faces challenges that threaten its sustainability as a source of rural economic development. Declining patronage, technological limitations, and competition from industrial products have reduced the income and relevance of traditional blacksmithing. These issues jeopardize not only the livelihoods of blacksmiths but also the broader socio-cultural fabric of rural communities, highlighting the need for a systematic investigation into the challenges and opportunities facing this craft.
Objectives of the study:
1. To evaluate the economic contribution of blacksmithing to rural development.
2. To identify challenges faced by traditional blacksmiths.
3. To propose strategies for revitalizing the craft and enhancing its economic impact.
Research questions:
1. How does blacksmithing contribute to rural economic development in Akure South?
2. What challenges hinder the sustainability of traditional blacksmithing?
3. What interventions can support the revival and growth of blacksmithing?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Blacksmithing significantly contributes to rural employment and income generation.
2. Technological and market competition negatively affect the sustainability of blacksmithing.
3. Targeted support and modernization initiatives will improve the economic impact of blacksmithing.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it explores a vital traditional craft’s role in rural economic development. The insights gained will assist policymakers and development practitioners in designing interventions that preserve cultural heritage while boosting economic opportunities in rural communities.
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating the contribution of blacksmithing to rural economic development in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State and does not include other artisanal crafts or regions.
